Ding as Darna

If you are familiar with the original Pinoy Komiks character, you would know that Darna is the superpowered Narda, who gets her power by swallowing a small stone and shouting 'Darna!'. But what if Narda's brother Ding swallows the stone instead; what superhero will he transform into. This alternate story concept was fleshed out and magnificently executed in the book Trese by Budjette Tan and Kajo Baldisimo. In the fourth chapter of the book, Alexandra Trese, the lead character, investigates a series of supernatural murders whose victims are the leaders of a certain gang in Manila. You may have guessed it; it was actually Ding in the form of a male Darna who has been killing these gangster honchos. The reason of his killing is revealed on the last pages of the chapter and it was dramatically and marvelously done to effect.

This sketch is based on one of the pages in that chapter. It was in one of the scenes where Darno (!) searched all of Darna's former enemies and went all out in them eventually putting an end to all the villains' lives. I colored the sketch using watercolor which is another new medium for me.

Anyway, if I may go back to the book, I can say that this is one of the best Filipino comic books to come in recent history. It includes a lot of urban legend, and Filipino culture seamlessly interwoven with a detective/crime story. If you have the time you should go to the bookstore and read it already. Now is the perfect time, since there will be a third and final (?) book coming soon to complete the series.

Transformers: More than meets the eye

After my Ultraman post (see previous post) I sort of had an urge to look back and reminisce the past. But not my very distant past. I just had an idea to feature a few of my works from years ago, and probably compare them with my my most recent ones so that I could assess if there are any changes at all with my style.

For my first blast from the past entry, I'd like to present one of my first (or may actually be the first) animation that I have done. This one is made using GIMP, which have similar functionalities with Photoshop but it is free.

So, this is sort of a Transformer logo, but instead of the symbols of decepticons and autobots, I created all new ones. The one I did is based on the company logos of ABS-CBN and GMA, which at the time of my creation is at a state of 'war'; war of ratings, copying of shows, pirating of talents etc. So, I created them as if they were autobots and decepticons, not sure which one is which.

You can see that it is not so fluid and there are even some abrupt frameskips. But I liked it at the time I created it.

TRANSFORMERS - More Than Meets the Eye

Ultraman!!!

This is a sketch of Ultraman using pen and ink and some additional background and effects using Photoshop. I tried to give it a taste similar to pop Japanese posters reminiscent of the 70's to 80's era.

I remember when I was a kid, I have watched a few Ultraman shows; the original Ultraman, Dyna, Tiga, Ace and Taro. And just recently I chanced upon watching the new Ultraman TV shows, Ultraman Nexus and Ultraman Max. I remember watching this as a child every Saturday morning on local free TV. We would then imitate all his attacks and shouts. Ultra Ray! Swatch!

I checked Wikipedia and I learned that there are already more than 30 spin-off shows of this franchise. In fact, it has been entered into the Guinness Book of World Records as the franchise with the most number of spin-offs. Cool!

Well, it was fun reminiscing those days...

Girl In Pink

One more sketch I did while experimenting using oil pastel. Some parts look so muddy. I'm still not quite comfortable with the blending of the colors. Also, the highlights and shadows look somewhat awkward, so I might have to improve on that also.

Two Pages

Here's another one of my very ambitious projects. This is a page in a mini-graphic novel that I'm trying to do. Right now I'm just experimenting on the style, conceptualizing blah, blah, blah...

The first one is just pen and ink on white paper.

The second one; I'm trying to experiment a little. It is a collage of a picture I took, with a sketch I made, with some texts added using Photoshop.

Both are still quite very sloppy obviously, but I do like how they turned out.

Plant Empowerment and Awareness Society (PEAS)

A Proposal for the Creation of an Organization for Advocating the Dignity of Plants

Abstract

We propose the creation of an independent, non-government organization for administering, promoting and monitoring of the rights and welfare of plants in the same way that there are organizations with such objectives for humans and animals.

We argue the legal principle adopted by citizens of Switzerland stating that plants have dignity outlined by the Swiss Federal Ethics Committee on Non-Human Biotechnology (ECNH). The entirety of the report (which will not be discussed here in details) can be found in this link.
http://www.ekah.admin.ch/en/topics/dignity-of-living-beings/index.html

I. The 6-point Agenda

We recommend the aforementioned organization to become vigilant in its main cause, that is, to raise awareness to the human populace that plants too have dignity. As such we are proposing a 6-point agenda in line with the committee's conclusions and summarized as follows:

1. Arbitrariness:
No arbitrary harm should be caused to plants without rational reason. Such acts are morally impermissible.

2. Instrumentalisation:
The complete instrumentalisation of plants – as a collective, as a species, or as individuals – requires moral justification.

3. Ownership of plants:

Plants – as a collective, as a species, or as individuals – are excluded for moral reasons from absolute ownership.

4. Patenting:

The patenting of plants should be morally justified and should coincide with the dignity of living beings with regard to plants.

5. Diversity:

Genetic modification of plants should always involve consideration of conserving and safeguarding the natural, i.e. not man-made, network of relationships.

6. Proportionality:

Any action with or towards plants that serves the self-preservation of humans is morally justified, as long as it is appropriate and follows the principle of precaution.

II. Basic Tenets

We also propose the following guidelines as our basic tenets in accordance with our 6-point agenda.

i. Destruction of weeds, bushes or any unwanted plant growth should be properly submitted for approval and will be decided by the committee if morally permissible.

ii. The usage of plants, i.e. as decoration (like orchids, palm trees etc), as tool or materials (like wood or leaves for houses) or as clothing (like cotton or tree fibres) should be submitted to the committee and shall only be approved if morally justifiable and if it is a necessity.

iii. Ownership of plants should be applied to the committee. Once approved, the owner is required to care for the plants in a tender and humane environment. This is applicable to those with plantations, crop fields etc. Note that ownership does not exempt the owner from the other guidelines.

iv. The patenting and genetic modification (i.e. for academic research or for medical and pharmaceutical purposes) should be closely regulated.

v. Any action done to plants, whether it be for providing food, shelter, protection to humans should be morally justified as one that serves for the self-preservation of humans. By this interpretation, any excessive action serving more than self-preservation (such as overfarming, excessive intake of plant products) is morally impermissible.

III. Advocacy

With these
tenets in mind, we now advocate the following stands:

No to illegal logging. No to illegal farming. No to illegal plant owning.
No to garnishes. No to topiary. No to bonsai. No to luxurious flower festivals.

Yes to sympathetic harvesting. No to brutal woodcutting.

Stop plant torture. Abolish Palm Sunday.

Stop plant decapitation. Don't give flowers on Valentines Day.

Stop plant murder. Use artificial Christmas trees and mistletoes.

No to Hawaiian leis. Just dance without 'em.

Finally, we recommend the organization be named PEAS or Plant Empowerment and Awareness Society.

On Birds, Wind and the Color Green

We are at a point of the technological era where the search for earth-friendly and renewable energy sources is becoming a thing of necessity instead of being just an academic pursuit. Alternative energy sources are the rage nowadays especially with the outcry of global-warming (climate change if you will) in every media everywhere.

The Obama administration just established its stand to pursue "more home-grown energy sources". Other governments all over the world have the same thrust. On the other hand, environmental organizations have encouraged and rallied for "green" technology.

Greenpeace.org, specifically, suggests the use of renewable energy sources mainly for their environmental-friendly nature. They are a go on green.

But how green is green?

For instance, wind power, one of those technologies that are frontrunners of the energy revolution has been highly recommended. But, this too has its negative effects on the environment. Recent reports have shown that the construction of wind farms has affected migration paths of a species of birds.

A recent USA government report has shown that the quest for alternative energy sources was a factor on the decline of a species of birds over a four-decade period. How you might say? The report say, and I quote verbatim, "Birds can collide with wind turbines and oil and gas wells, and studies have shown that some species, such as Prairie-chickens and sage grouse, will avoid nesting near the structures." This is a very immediate effect. Who knows what might happen in the long run.

Other technologies, like wave power (which utilizes tides or ocean currents) have been found to affect the actual currents that they tap, which in turn affect the life forms that rely on these as their niche.

Solar, Geothermal, Bioenergy, Hydroelectric. We may not know any negative effects on the environment, for now. But maybe sometime, in the future, another group of researchers, for instance, might discover that the light absorbed from the solar panels have blinded migratory birds (too far-fetched, I know).

The bottom-line is that there really is no purely "green" technology. Technology as a definition is a practical application of science and as such, something will always be exploited. There is always a tint with a different colour, blood-red, smoke-black or whatever.

This article does not defy the search for newer, "green" technologies and it does not contradict the environmental organizations that promote such. But as we have highlighted how necessary are these new technologies for our and the next generation’s survival, it may also be necessary to highlight that these may also have various effects in our environment. As we rally for these new ideas, let's also be open to the fact that these are not perfect or fool-proof. Nothing is purely green.

Endless Traffic in the City of Billboards

Time for my always delayed, ever-erratic Project 365 post. So here is my new sketch, a bland depiction of a daily routine I encounter every time I go to work.

It did not appear how I envisioned to be, that's for sure. I imagine it to be very crowded, metallic and hot, as in Jeepney by Vicen
te Manansala or urban, dirty and slum-like as in Timawa art by Gerry Alanguilan. Mine didn't even come close to a kalingkingan. Well, this is the best I could do. I'm trying to touch up using Photoshop but I wanted to post the raw image first.

EXTRA! EXTRA!

And below, is a sketch I did a few days ago while waiting for a meeting one Wednesday morning. So that makes my Project 365 - Day 11 post.

---------------------------------

Hush Batman

Batman Hush Volume 1 is the first trade paperback comic book I bought. And for me, it was a great introduction to the Batman mythos. It has lots of essential Batman elements; you will be given a healthy dose of Batman's detective skills and a lot of action scenes. You will be introduced with most of the significant characters in the comic, the villains, allies and even Batman's love interests.

It has a lot of references to previous events throughout the Dark Knight's history. in fact, you will need to research some of these references just so you ill understand them, which is good because after reading the entire series (Volume 1 and 2) you will have grasped a brief overview of the important events in the Batman's life.

-----------------------------------------
I did this sketch based on this comic book. I drew Hush actually based on Rorschach which I drew previously (note the similarities of the trench coat).

Watchmen - Rorschach

I have been busy with some important matters so I wasn't able to create my daily sketch for last week.

Moving on with my Project 365, I present you my own sketch of Watchmen's Rorschach. I copied elements from a watchmen poster and other elements from a sketch I found in the net.

Anyways, I watched the movie last week and all I can say is that it still has a lot of potential, although in my opinion, it was not able to reach its full potential. I loved the opening credits, hats off to that part. The whole movie seems a bit slow at most parts, but well acted. What probably is needed is a bit more fine-tuning on the editing of the scenes. The ending, in my opinion, is not that bad even if it diverges from the one in the comic book.

All in all, the movie is a good watch. It has some great moments but not a great movie as a whole. Still, I would recommend it to comic book fans and non-fans alike as it is still fun seeing the characters in live action.

This is the same with the Harry Potter movies. Even though some of the films did not stay very faithful to the book, it is great actually seeing the characters and the environment instead of just imagining them.

Project 365 - Day 4

For today, I used a combination black pen and a marker. I'm trying to experiment on what works for me and what doesn't.

Featured Artist: BOB MARLEY

Real Name
: Robert Nesta Marley
Date Of Birth: February 6, 1945
Date Of Death: May 11, 1981
Cause of death: Malignant melanoma (skin cancer)
Place of birth: Nine Miles, Saint Ann Jamaica
Wife: Rita Anderson Marley

_____________________________________________________

Marley began his music career with rocksteady and reggae group "The Wailers", which included two other reggae musicians, Bunny Livingston (Bunny Wailer) and Peter McIntosh (Peter Tosh), both who later left the group and went on to become successful solo artists. After The Wailers broke up 1974, Marley went on with "Bob Marley & The Wailers" with the I Threes (his wife Rita Marley, Judy Mowatt and Marcia Griffiths) as backing vocalists.

He became famous with his 1975 hit "No Woman No cry."

Bob Marley left Jamaica at the end of 1976, and went to England, where he recorded both Exodus (which included "Jamming", "Waiting in Vain" and "One Love/People Get Ready") and Kaya (which included "Satisfy My Soul" and "Is This Love")
,and where he was arrested for possession of a joint of marijuana (the word kaya is synonymus with marijuana.) Survival came out in 1979 (featuring "Africa Unite" and "Zimbabwe") and Uprising followed in 1980 (it featured "Redemption Song," and "Could You Be Loved." )

He passed away in Miami, Florida on May 11, 1981. His funeral in Jamaica was a dignified affair with combined elements of Ethiopian Orthodoxy and Rastafari. He is buried in a crypt at Nine Miles, near his birthplace, with his Gibson guitar, a bud of marijuana and a Bible.

Project 365 - Day 3

Third sketch for year 2009! Still on track (not considering my 60 sketch for Jan and Feb).

Anyway, here is the sketch of Michael Jackson, the King of Pop. Michael Joseph Jackson (born August 29, 1958) is an American recording artist, entertainer, and businessman. He debuted on the professional music scene at the age of 11 as a member of The Jackson 5 and began a solo career in 1971 while still a member of the group. He has created lots of chart-topping hits through out his career. My favorite is Man in The Mirror, especially since it's good to play it in guitar only, instrumental acoustic version.

Right now, Jackson is facing trial due to child molestation. He has a fun ranch for children which is called Neverland.

Project 365 - Day 2

My second installment for Project 365 is no other than The Beatles' mainman John Lennon! For now I will be getting write-ups from Wikipedia. Maybe later, when I am not too busy, I'll try to create write something in my own words.

______________________________________________________________

From Wikipedia.org

John Winston Ono Lennon, MBE (born John Winston Lennon; 9 October 1940 – 8 December 1980) was an English rock musician, singer, writer, songwriter, artist, actor and peace activist who gained worldwide fame as one of the founding members, and the de facto leader of The Beatles. Lennon along with Paul McCartney formed one of the most influential and successful songwriting partnerships and "wrote some of the most popular music in rock and roll history". Lennon revealed his rebellious nature and wit on television, in films such as A Hard Day's Night, in books such as In His Own Write, and in press conferences and interviews. He was controversial through his work as a peace activist, artist, and author. Lennon had two sons: Julian Lennon, with his first wife Cynthia Lennon, and Sean Ono Lennon, with his second wife, avant-garde artist Yoko Ono.

After The Beatles, Lennon launched a successful solo career by releasing the critically acclaimed albums John Lennon/Plastic Ono Band and Imagine and writing songs such as "Give Peace a Chance" and "Imagine". After a self-imposed "retirement" from 1976 to 1980, Lennon reemerged with a comeback album, Double Fantasy, which would win the 1981 Grammy Award for Album of the Year. Less than one month after the release of the album, Lennon was murdered in New York City on 8 December 1980, and he has since been described as a cultural icon.

Project 365 (Kinda) - Day 1

I've started a very ambitious project (for me at least.) I will try to create 365 sketches in 365 days of 2009. I know I'm already short of 60 sketches for January and February but I'll try to catch up for those soon. My goal? It's like hitting two birds with one stone. One, I got to hone my skills in drawing, which I really want to improve. Two, I have sure content for this blog at least weekly.

Anyway, I got this idea somewhere in the net where you take 1 picture per day for a year.

So, to start, here is the first entry for Project 365. My "theme" for this week is Popular Music Icons.

______________________________________________________________

From wikipedia.org...

Elvis Aaron Presley (January 8, 1935 – August 16, 1977; middle name sometimes written Aron)a was an American singer, actor, and musician. A cultural icon, he is commonly known simply as "Elvis", and is also sometimes referred to as "The King of Rock 'n' Roll" or "The King".

In 1954, Presley began his career as one of the first performers of rockabilly, an uptempo fusion of country and rhythm and blues with a strong back beat. His novel versions of existing songs, mixing "black" and "white" sounds, made him popular—and controversial—as did his uninhibited stage and television performances. He recorded songs in the rock and roll genre, with tracks like "Hound Dog" and "Jailhouse Rock" later embodying the style. Presley had a versatile voice and had unusually wide success encompassing other genres, including gospel, blues, ballads and pop. To date, he has been inducted into four music halls of fame.

In the 1960s, Presley made the majority of his 31 movies—mainly poorly reviewed, but financially successful, musicals. In 1968, he returned to live music in a television special, and performed across the U.S., notably in Las Vegas. Throughout his career, he set records for concert attendance, television ratings and recordings sales. He is one of the best-selling and most influential artists in the history of music. Health problems, drug dependency and other factors led to his death at age 42.

Nuclear Timeline

1955 – The Philippines' nuclear energy program started when the country signed on to the US Atoms for Peace Program during the Magsaysay administration.

1956 – President Carlos Garcia pushed for the creation of the Philippine Atomic Energy Commission

1963 – 1965 – President Diosdado Macapagal initiated the first UN pre-investment feasibility study for a nuclear power plant in Luzon.

1973 – The oil crisis of 1973 hastened the development of the country's nuclear program.

1975 – 1979 - Napocor and Westinghouse Electric Co., the company which made the equipment for the world’s first nuclear power plant in 1957 , signed the contract to build the South East Asia's first nuclear plant.

1984 -- Construction of the Bataan Nuclear Power Plant is completed. The 620-megawatt power plant sits on a 357-hectare government reservation at Napot Point in Morong, Bataan, and cost the government over $2 billion.

February 1985 - an IAEA pre-operations safety review was conducted and by June 1985 a pre-operational core load test was completed and the plant was ready for commercial operations.

February 11, 1986 - the Supreme Court enjoined PAEC from issuing a license to Napocor that would have started the plant's commercial operations.

February 25, 1986 - the EDSA Revolution signaled the end of the Marcos regime and the rise of Cory Aquino to presidency.

April 30, 1986 (1) – Five days after the Chernobyl nuclear accident on April 25, 1986, then President Corazon Aquino suspended the Westinghouse contract and created the Presidential Committee on the Philippine Nuclear Power Plant. This led to the cabinet decision to mothball the plant, citing an international team finding of roughly 4,000 safety defects, in addition to the fact that it was built on an earthquake-prone area.

1987 – President Aquino transformed the PAEC into the Philippine Nuclear Research Institute (PNRI), through Executive Order 128. It mandated the PNRI to "promote and regulate peaceful uses of nuclear energy, including its application in power generation, agriculture, medicine, and others".

June 1992 - A government-commissioned study by the US-based National Union of Scientists Corp. finds that the safety-related defects were so “serious and numerous that it would be uneconomical and dangerous to have it repaired, fixed and possibly ready for operation as a nuclear power plant.”

1998 and 1999 - The two gas turbines as part of the settlement with Westinghouse were sold for only $58.3 million.

July 16, 1990 (2) - An earthquake of magnitude 7.7 struck central Luzon. This was the largest earthquake recorded in 1990. Its epicenter was at Cabanatuan City, about 100 km northeast of Pinatubo.

June 15, 1991 - The onset of the climactic eruption of Mt. Pinatubo. On the same day, Typhoon Yunya struck the island, passing about 75 km (50 miles) north of the volcano. Pyroclastic flows poured from the summit, reaching as far as 16 km away from it. Typhoon rains mixed with the ash deposits caused massive lahars.
The ash cloud from the volcano covered an area of some 125,000 km² (50,000 mi²), bringing total darkness to much of central Luzon. Almost all of the island received some ashfall, which formed a heavy, rain-saturated snow-like blanket. Tephra fell over most of the South China Sea and ashfall was recorded as far away as Vietnam, Cambodia and Malaysia.

April 13, 2007 – Filemon Condino, head of the fiscal planning and assessment division of the Bureau of the Treasury announced that the country had made the final payment of $15 million for the BNPP loans. After almost 32 years, the controversial power plant cost the Filipino taxpayer a total of P21.2 billion ($460 million dollars at today's exchange rate) on a debt of $1.06 billion.

January 2008 - An eight-man team from the IAEA arrived in the Philippines to examine whether or not plant can be rehabilitated. The team will eventually report to the government whether it is still economically feasible to restart the plant or to just abandon it altogether.

February 2009 - Congressman Mark Cojuangco proposes to revive the Bataan Nuclear Power Plant and is seeking $1 billion in government funds to revive the 620-megawatt plant in Bataan province.

***

Notes to self (not a required reading):
(1) An Alternate history can be traced back from the date when the plant was mothballed in April 1986 by the Aquino Administration. The following can be considered key events leading to this event:
- People Power Revolution of February 1986
- Ninoy Aquino's Assassination of August 1983

(2) There is a possibility of the actual operation of the Bataan Nuclear Power Plant considering Alternate History mentioned in (1) . The natural disasters (Earthquake, Pinatubo Eruption, Typhoon) may or may not have any impact on the functional plant.
